A Familiar App, A Foreign Icon: WhatsApp’s UX Pivot

Aug 4, 2025

Hello Creatives😁
Ever had a moment where a familiar platform suddenly feels unfamiliar🤔?

On a personal note, I didn’t receive any in app notification about WhatsApp Business’s icon change when it first rolled out, and for a moment, I thought I had installed the ❌wrong app! The iconic "B" logo was replaced with a minimalist "+" sign, a subtle yet symbolic shift that's easy to miss but hard to ignore.

WhatsApp Business recently underwent this rebranding to reflect growth, possibilities, and connection—the core essence of what the platform offers. By moving away from the traditional "B," WhatsApp is signaling that their platform has evolved beyond just "business" to encompass a broader ecosystem of growth and innovation for users.

Interestingly, the "+" does share a similarity with a third-party app, WhatsApp Plus, a mod application 😐 offering unofficial features. While this could create mild brand confusion, the symbolic meaning of the "+" in WhatsApp Business remains compelling.

From my perspective, this change reflects a deeper trend in UX: the power of abstraction. Icons and interfaces today are becoming more dynamic, open to interpretation, and less anchored to literal visuals. It's an opportunity for brands to build emotional resonance and trigger a sense of curiosity.

For designers, this update is a timely reminder that simplicity doesn't dilute meaning it amplifies it. So next time you're tweaking a logo or refining your app's interface, ask yourself: "What story does this design tell?"
